Calvin, Lither, Bullinger, and Cranmer, individually these are some of the greatest theologians who have ever lived and put together, these Reformers are akin to the 1927 New York Yankees. Needless to day when all of these godly men are created as authors in a devotional, the book becomes not only a must read, but a yearly reread. The book I am referring to is 90 Days in Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, and Galatians, which has writings taken from Calvin, Luther, Bullinger, and Cranmer, which are then edited into devotional form by noted scholar Lee Gatiss and produced by The Good Book Company, for the Explore the Book series. Explore the Book is a newer series of 90 day devotionals which are synonymous with top notch scholarship while maintain accessibility to the reader.
In the Explore the Book series, the works are broken up into, as the series title suggests, 90 individual devotionals aimed at Christians in varying stages of their faith, every Christians will engulf this book with glee. Furthermore each devotional has 3 parts, reading the passage, one or two short devotional paragraphs with application, and closing in prayer.
With regard to the reading of the Bible this series advocates for the “open Bible” technique. Therefore every devotional has no Bible passage printed in the book, the reader must open up their own personal Bible to read the assigned text. This is the greatest part of the devotional series and a policy more devotional series should embrace.
What’s more, while most of the devotionals in this series has a reader go through an book of the Bible in a exegetical form, this devotional has the reader take a short pause on each 7th day, for a devotional from Cranmer. These 7th day mediations are a great way to prepare for the Lord’s Day.
Lastly, I am not the biggest fan of mass produced personal devotional books, yet this devotional (and the series as a whole) has challenged and forced me to reevaluate this line of thinking due to the depth, application, and articulation of this devotional.
This book was provided to me free of charge from The Good Book Company in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.
